Emily McCumber

The Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation is pleased to announce Emily McCumber as the recipient of the 2016 Nel Oudemans award. A recognition of excellence in an emerging New Brunswick artist practicing a métier in fine craft, the $2000 award will be presented at the New Brunswick Fine Craft Festival on June 15th, 2016 at the Marco Polo Terminal in Saint John.

McCumber, a graduate of the New Brunswick College of Art and Design, is a weaver deeply involved in all aspects of the process. Her work is marked by precision. She was characterized by her nominators Elizabeth Miller and Christine Stanley as an artist who has mastered complex traditional patterns with a creative spark – an artist who takes what has come before her in the history of weaving, and yet also makes her work original. She is skilled in warping, overshot, tapestry, huck, and multi harness weaving, creating an array of shawls, blankets, clothing, runners and rugs in sensuous, beautiful colors.

The Board of Directors is grateful to Maegen Black, Andrea Butler and Tandi Hooper- Clark for their professional expertise in the jury process.
