Founded by a dedicated team of volunteers in 2002, the Saint John Arts Centre has developed into a vibrant multidisciplinary venue serving the Greater Saint John area. Sheila Mackay provided early funding to the fledgling organization, believing in the need and value of a centre for artistic expression. The foundation has continued to support the growth of Saint John Arts Centre as a focal point for artistic expression in the region.
Some Notable Special Projects:
Graphic Design Studio
In support of the unique Portfolio Development Program, funding was provided to establish a modern graphic design studio. Equipment was purchased to allow for experimentation and instruction in photography, graphic design and video production for scholarship students of the James Venner Russel Foundation funded Portfolio Development program. Equipment was also provided for summer interns who are fostered through Canada Works Funding initiatives. Fred Ross Scholarship winner Andrew Hicks, who participated in these programs noted “Saint John Arts Centre provided me with the tools to continue my studies through meaningful summer employment.”
Pottery Studio
Beginning with Carol Taylor and Darren Emaneau, SJAC has a long tradition of offering classes working with clay. In 2012, special project funding was granted to allow for the purchase and installation of a kiln to augment a new pottery studio. Executive director Andrew Kierstead noted that funding allows for affordable, accessible educational opportunities as well as creating a source of potential revenue for this non profit organization.
In awarding Special Project Funding, SHMF salutes the vision and work of SJAC staff and volunteers for continued work in enhancing the capabilities of the centre.
