“On behalf of our community, I’m thrilled to congratulate the artists recognized at the Open Studio National Printmaking Awards last night,” said Jennifer Bhogal, Executive Director of Open Studio. “It was an absolute pleasure to experience an overview of Canadian print media in the generous submissions we received in conjunction with 100 Prints. I never fail to be in awe of the themes skillfully communicated via the revered art form of printmaking. These celebrated artists marry thought-provoking imagery with technical mastery. I was not envious of the jurors’ responsibility to pull six artists from the wealth of accomplished artwork we received. Congratulations again to this year’s honoured artists!”
The award winning prints were selected by a distinguished jury of arts professionals: Darren Alexander, of Tatar Alexander Public Art Management; Pat Feheley, of Feheley Fine Arts; and David H. Kaye, of David Kaye Gallery. Remarking on his experience on the jury, David H. Kaye said, “Jurying this event was an enjoyable time, even though it means making tough decisions to whittle down the number of donated works to only one hundred.” Said Pat Feheley, “It was a great privilege to have been able to participate in this year’s jury for the Open Studio’s 100 Prints. I was truly stunned by the overall quality, both technically and in terms of imagery, of the prints in this year’s submissions.”
The Open Studio National Printmaking Awards were launched in 2008 to recognize and reward excellence in the Canadian printmaking community. Open to all printmakers in Canada and Canadian printmakers working worldwide, the awards are presented in conjunction with Open Studio’s annual 100 Prints. Combining elements of a fine art exhibition and a lottery, 100 Prints is a much-anticipated event in the Canadian arts community, and provides a chance for art lovers to come face to face with works from celebrated Canadian visual artists, as well as pieces by promising emerging talents. It is also a major annual fundraiser for Open Studio, an artist-run, Toronto-based charitable organization that provides professional development opportunities for artists and promotes contemporary, original, fine art prints.
