Head of Visual Arts at Canada Council to speak at East of There Conference
The foundation is happy to welcome Sylvie Gilbert, the newly appointed head of Canada Council’s Visual Arts Section, to the East of There Conference being held at New Brunswick Museum, June 20-23rd. This conference is a collaborative project examining current art issues affecting Atlantic Canadian artists and art institutions.
On Saturday, June 22, Ms. Gilbert will present a talk “The Change Agenda at the Canada Council” in the Mary Oland Theatre at 11:45 am.
Ms. Gilbert’s 25-year career has been committed to developing and expanding the exhibition and promotion of contemporary visual arts in Canada. She holds a master of arts in media studies from Concordia University. Early in her career she worked as a program officer in the visual and media arts section of the council. As Director at Artexte, she advanced their mandate of supporting the experimental, innovative, and critical nature of contemporary visual art. Ms. Gilbert has worked as senior curator with the Walter Phillips Gallery and at the Banff International Curatorial Institute and was director/curator of the Gallery at the Saidye Bronfman for the Arts in Montreal.
