SHMF Merit Bursaries 2020-21

Merit Bursary 2020/2021 Recipients

In the academic year 2020-21, Sheila Hugh Mackay Merit Bursaries were awarded to three individuals, chosen for outstanding work in visual arts. Annually, the SHMF funds merit bursaries for visual arts students at the three major  New Brunswick post secondary institutions, Mount Allison University, the  New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and  the University of Moncton.  Each institution selects a deserving second or third year student in a visual arts program to receive a $2000 bursary in recognition of their accomplishments within the program of studies.  With these bursaries, the SHMF supports the   pursuit of excellence by young artists, as well as saluting the expertise and dedication of the teaching staff of these respected institutions.

Lucia Choulakian, a multi-media artist studying at the University of Moncton, was recognised for her accomplishments in visual art by the 2020-21 SHMF Merit bursary.  Directrice, Julie Forgues describes Ms. Choulakian’s application portfolio as accomplished.

Jodi Haley, a designer and goldsmith is currently completing her graduate program in NBCCD’s Advanced Studio Practice program.  Her work was characterized by Studio Head, Jean Rooney as notable for its  design excellence and  exquisite craftsmanship.  In 2021, this bursary was renamed the Brigitte Clavette Merit Award to honor the exceptional career contributions  of the nationally renowned metalsmith, educator and artist, Brigitte Clavette.

Manny Travers of Mount Allison University was praised by Erik Edson, Professor and Head of the Fine Arts Department, as an outstanding student in the faculty of Fine Arts. Travers was selected both for his creative output and his dedication to serving others as a sculpture technician.
