Albert county ceramic artist, Wendy Johnston has been selected to receive the 2025 SHMF International Creative Residency bursary to support her upcoming three-month residency at the Taoxichuan Art Center in Jingdezhen, China. Johnston, a recognized New Brunswick potter and arts activist, has been invited to immerse herself in Chinese ceramic traditions and practices at the renowned porcelain centre. This residency hosts contemporary ceramic artists from around the world, and this year, Wendy is invited to represent Canada. Nominators Jim Kitts and Ralph Simpson lauded Johnston’s expertise, and eagerly anticipate her infusion of ideas in the craft community of New Brunswick on her return.

Ms. Johnston will depart for China in the fall of 2025. “I am eager to explore the translucency and delicacy of Jingdezhen porcelain, practice traditional throwing techniques and brushwork and to push limits by experimenting with mixed media”.

The International Residency bursary is one of the many juried career development programs SHMF offers to deepen the creative practices of New Brunswick visual artists.  It is a once-in-a-career opportunity to support career growth through international collaboration and interaction, and dedicated time for reflection and experimentation.

SHMF offers diverse opportunities for New Brunswick professional artists to grow and develop creatively. Consult our website for possibilities.
