SHMF has been celebrating New Brunswick’s amazing visual artists since 1991. Join the process of recognizing important creative forces in our midst. Consult the SHMF website for full details on the Strathbutler Award and the Emerging Artisan Award. The 2025 nomination and application period for these juried awards is open until April 1st.
The Strathbutler Award is a biennial award of $25,000 which recognizes artists and craftspeople who have achieved excellence in their field while having made a substantial contribution over a significant period of time in the province of New Brunswick.
The Emerging Artisan Award recognizes accomplishments in craft and design by emerging New Brunswick artisans. The award is as an enduring mark of respect for Nel Oudemans, a Fredericton-based weaver, educator, and nationally recognized leader in Canada’s applied arts field. This juried award is intended to support the creative growth of artists in the early stages of their careers. In conjunction with the $4,000 award, the recipient is eligible for additional funding to support an approved educational opportunity within one year of the award.
