Established by art patron, Sheila Hugh Mackay in 1987, the Foundation is governed by a volunteer board of Directors and is managed by an executive director. After Ms. Mackay’s death, the Foundation was bequeathed substantial funding to continue the broad spectrum of contributions to the cultural life of the province.

Annual juried awards and scholarship programs celebrate artistic excellence and encourage development. The Strathbutler Award recognises artistic excellence and community contribution. The Nel Oudemans Award encourages emerging craftspeople. Arts Advocacy Awards recognise exceptional contributions to the promotion and understanding of New Brunswick arts. The Fred Ross Scholarship supports post secondary level studies in any visual art discipline and the Sheila Hugh Mackay Scholarship facilitates post graduate study in visual arts.

The Foundation has provided grants for a wide range of special projects and continues to work in partnership with organizations and individuals to encourage creativity and artistic excellence.
