The Re-Creation of the Fred Ross 1948 War Memorial Mural
The Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation is proud to act as the major funder for the re-creation of a 20’ by 16’ diptych commissioned by Fredericton High School in honour of their fallen classmates. The original panels, “The Destruction of War” and “Rebuilding the World through Education” which originally hung in Fredericton High School did not survive and are now being re-created under the supervision of Mr. Ross and will be installed in UNB’s Richard J. Currie Center of the Fredericton Campus.
Participation in this project stands as a tribute to Mr. Ross’s significant contribution to Canadian art and will provide an inspiring public image for future generations. The re-creation process provides a mentorship opportunity for young New Brunswick artists and creates an opportunity for scholarly research in art history.

Funding to assist in the establishment of an innovative annual program in artist residencies designed to promote professional development of visual artists.
“Matrix” is the working title of a project aimed at providing a creative time and place shared by visual artists from each cultural sector of the province.

Financial support for the research stage of a publication “Historire de l’art acadien”
This book will be an exhaustive study of the development of the visual arts in Acadie. Its publication is planned to coincide with the 5oth anniversary celebrations of the University of Moncton in 2013.

The Sabat Lecture Series
Support for the esteemed annual memorial Christina Sabat Lecture at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, which through presentations by celebrated creative leaders, promotes appreciative critical analysis of the role and place of arts in society.
The Foundation is very pleased that this year’s grant has been dedicated to the publication of book written by UNB education students as a gift Alberto Manguel which will also be used as a fundraiser to support the future of this valuable educational community event.
Based on Feedback from the Strathbutler Symposium, the SHMF has selected projects that best addressed the following expressed needs of the visual arts community.
- Opportunity for creative exploration is a necessity for artists – Inspiration and training comes in a variety of ways: formal lectures and classes, mentorship and residencies, communication between practicing artists. Artists need funding for a variety of opportunities to grow and develop both vision and technique.
- Increased Public Art needed in N.B. communities – Support is needed for the creation of work available to the public that challenges, celebrates and commemorates our sense of place and time.
- Critical writing is vital for the support of our artists – Promotion of New Brunswick artists needs the element of informed, reasoned and accessible publication in a variety of media.
- Networking opportunities for artists need to be enhanced – Building support systems and networks underscores the value of artists in the creative economy. Opportunities need to be developed to support awareness and appreciation of the contributions of New Brunswick artists within our province.
