The SHMF is proud to become a presenting sponsor of the permanent virtual exhibition New Brunswick Mat Registry: Sharing Our New Brunswick Mat Hooking Heritage. Based on a multi-year project documenting over 600 New Brunswick heritage hooked mats, this exhibition will preserve and interpret a New Brunswick heritage craft. This exhibition will extend knowledge and appreciation of the artform itself, as well as the creative individuals behind the mats. It will be an important resource for both reseachers and contemporary makers who are part of the global renaissance of fiber arts.
SHMF salutes the efforts of many who have worked to create an archive of information on mat hooking and the creative individuals behind the mats. Co-chairs of the New Brunswick Mat Registry, Judy Morrison and MIrielle Poirier have led a dedicated team of volunteers in collection data for a virtual permanent exhibition on the New Brunswick Museum website. It will present mat information, images, and stories, including videos of oral interviews, educational module on hooking history. “This has fostered a renewed sense of pride and understanding of the mat makers, their motivations, their talents and their unique contributions to the story that is New Brunswick”, says Judy Morison.
Signature Grants are given to support significant, timely projects that are important to the visual arts of New Brunswick.
