Ralph Simpson Chosen for 2019 Nel Oudemans Award
Ralph Simpson has been selected as the 2019 recipient of the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation Nel Oudemans Award recognizing the pursuit of excellence in the field of fine craft and design by emerging New Brunswick artisans.
A recent graduate of New Brunswick College of Art and Design, Mr. Simpson explores plant and wood fibre to create contemporary sculptural forms.
The SHMF is grateful to jurors Alana Baird, Darren Byers, and Kathy Hooper for professional adjudication of all 2019 applicants. They characterized Mr. Simpson as “an impressive emerging artist whose extensive body of work stood out in the 2019 award adjudication. Building on a first career as a research biologist and forestry expert, Simpson immersed himself in ancient traditions of basketry from around the world. From these global inspirations, his unique, individual artistic vision has evolved. His experimentation with a wide range of natural materials result in richly textured sculptural forms that reflect his innovative investigation into the natural world. Simpson is deeply engaged in his creative work and professional career.”
Mr. Simpson will be presented with the award at the award at the SHMF Visual Arts Awards Ceremony on September 26, 2019 at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.
