Permanent Collection of Work by Strathbutler Artists at the New Brunswick Museum
In 1996 the Sheila Hugh Foundation sponsored the New Brunswick Museum’s Colin B. Mackay Gallery as a showcase for New Brunswick art.
During her lifetime, Sheila Mackay began a permanent collection of work by Strathbutler artists under the curatorial direction of Peter Laroque and the foundation continues to build this collection of work as a long term legacy for Canadians.
“The Sheila Hugh Mackay Collection of Strathbutler Award Winners at the New Brunswick Museum is a profound affirmation of the importance of contemporary visual art in our province and an invaluable legacy that encourages an understanding of culture’s fundamental value within our community,” says Peter Larocque.
On the 20th anniversary of the Strathbutler Award, a retrospective exhibition Regard was organized by the New Brunswick Museum as a tribute to 20 years of patronage to the visual arts in New Brunswick.Peter J. Larocque, B.F.A. (cum laude), Mount Allison University, 1983; Dip. Ed., McGill University, 1987; M.A. (History), University of New Brunswick, 1996, is Head of the Humanities Department of the New Brunswick Museum where he has worked in a curatorial capacity since 1988.
Responsible for the New Brunswick cultural history and art collections, his areas of concentration for publication and exhibition are fine art as well as textiles. In 2014, he was designated a Fellow of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design as well as an honorary member of the New Brunswick Historical Society.
Laroque is curator of the Permanent Strathbutler Collection at the New Brunswick Museum and actively collaborates with the foundation to promote contemporary visual art.
